Most vehicles on the roads today have automatic transmissions. Replacing a transmission is a big, pricey job. Sometimes it cost more to replace the transmission than the price of the car even. If you are driving a car with an automatic transmission, we have a few tips for you on how to extend your transmission’s life. ;

Use Your Emergency Brake ;

When you park your car, remember to use your emergency brake. This is especially true if you are parked on an incline. Using the emergency brake reduces stress on the parking pawl and linkage inside the transmission. ;

Check Your Transmission Fluid

Periodically, check the level of your transmission fluid. Never drive when the fluid is low or you suspect you have a leak. Transmission fluid helps lubricate the gears inside the transmission and prevent grinding. In automatic transmission, the hydraulic coupling system is what actually shifts the gears inside the transmission. ;

Get it Checked Out ;

If you know your car has a problem with engine overheating or you suspect something is wrong with your transmission, get it checked out ASAP. Finding a small problem now can save you thousands of dollars in the long run. If your car engine is overheating, this causes extra stress on the transmission as well because transmission fluid has to work under higher temperatures. Luckily, high quality synthetic oil, like AMSOIL, maintains fluid properties even at high operating temperatures. Some transmission fluids will degrade and change viscosity when subjected to high temperatures. ;
